Ehalakasa National Poetry Slam Championship 2022
SILVERBIRD CINEMAS, Accra Mall
FRIDAY 30, DECEMBER 2022
7:30 PM

What has Poetry Slam got to do with us? Is there a reason for us to care about the World Poetry Slam Championships, the Africa Cup of Poetry Slam, the West Africa Slam Competition and the freshly initiated Ehalakasa National Slam Championship? What are the answers to these time-bound questions and who among us will do us the honors in providing answers? Do these poetry slams have what it takes to raise the red, gold and green from below the flagpole to the place of glory and honor? Do we have what it takes to search, uncover, develop, empower, promote and sustain a slam subculture in Ghana?

Does slam have the capacity to reach the level of National Math and Science Quiz (NSMQ)? Can poetry slam generate the same kind of anticipation; bring traffic to the media, corporations, stakeholders and the general public, when the season is birthed? Can poetry slam feed the slammer? Will poetry slam be able to take the slammer on a trip for tournament? The hard but honest answer to all these weighty questions are yes, yes and yes it can. Three yeses, to three round, within three-minute of poets-tree at a poetry slam is all it takes to start the word war revolution in Ghana.

Poetry Slam is a revolutionary movement, competitive poetry performances, a kind of groundbreaking space and a catalyst for change across generations. Slam is the only space mandated with the privilege to allow even the blind to see the “ice” in the “voice” of the voiceless. Slam is taking over that which has longed to be over taking by light and or by sight. Slam is the answer to the question no one was willing to ask. So here, is the question, why not slam now?

Without paths and roads there are no use for maps and navigators. Without map and navigation, one cannot go out in search for the world and new grounds. This is the challenge to go see the world, this is the season to break new grounds, this is the time to slam and be slammed at the Ehalakasa National Poetry Slam 2022. The search for a national slam champ to represent Ghana at the next Africa Cup of Poetry Slam and the World Poetry Slam Championship in Brazil 2023 is here. After three (3) different power-packed slam preliminaries in June, August and October, the stage is set for the grand slam Friday December 30, 2022 at the Silverbird Cinemas inside the Accra Mall. The night we have all been waiting for, the night to witness the lyrical bout that will determine who leads Ghana to the world in words, rhyme, sound, light, color and power. The nine (9) finalists slamming on the night include Afi, Nura, Baby Poet, Faiba, Chessed, Wiseborn, Briana, Jewell King-Speaks and Nana Kuffour. Let the battle begin.

SLAM RULES
The slam is a three (3) round healthy competitive performance where poets perform their originally written spoken word pieces before a live audience to be judged by five (5) randomly selected audience members as judges on the scale of one to ten (1 – 10).

For this particular slam, two (2) professionals with good knowledge about poetry slam will be invited to assist in judging.

After each performance, slam master will drop one (1) high score and one (1) low score then add up the three (3) scores in between to make up the total score for the performance. This will make 30 the highest score.

Each piece or performance must be within 3 minutes. Slammer has a 10 seconds grace period after which one (1) point will be deducted from slammers total score.

No props are allowed (no music, no costume, no use of any object apart from your body)

30 seconds singing allowed but no instrumentals

We are so excited to see you all at the Silverbird Cinemas, Accra Mall on Friday December 30, 2022.

Many men and women of the Gold Coast fought, toiled and sacrificed, just
so that the generations after theirs could live honestly and freely, to dictate

feel as light as a feather
My emotions seems to fly at any wind blowing direction…
I just can’t hold and control.
My screams are explosive and loud,
But no one ever wants to hear me out…
They claim they never heard me shout.

Anger boils through my heart with rage.
Piercing out with some partial self hate.
I’m being cuddled by fear and hurt and shame…
There’s so much to this pain.
But I just do my best to block this negativity out,
I’m almost numb to it…

I’ve been tortured and raped…
Each day he comes around,
His hard presence always feels closer and deeper.
Tearing fabrics like he is King Kong or some character from a vampire or possessed movie…
Pain pumping through my veins,
My heart beats sounds as good as the beats by *Drey* Like audible as connected to a Bluetooth device…
And 10 times faster.
My mouth is being covered, so is my breathe.
There’s always sweat and a package of goose bumps,
I always have to beg for his Mercy…

Don’t look at me like that, I promise I mean it…

And for the past years, I have been a slave to my memories…
Whipped and molested repeatedly,
Day after night…

Come on,
Society judged me
You judged me…
You beat my ears with your mouth,
But some days, the side effects of this mouth to ear thing recks me…
Cos you have no idea where I have been and what I’ve been through.
And for your info,
There’s nothing fun about doing something you never wish to be doing but have to,
Just to keep you alive and far away from the everyday pain…

I Know my dressing gives you the conclusive impression that,
*”She’s just a hore”*
And like other exposed women, I’m nothing.
But you don’t have to be wrong about that.
After all you never listened anyway.
And what’s the point in protecting what’s already broken…
I mean hiding what’s already stolen…
The flesh that’s already destroyed…
Well!

If only these bruises would show on my skin,
Like a three days old unfinished tattoo,
You would see just how much I hurt inside.
I have lost my identity at the tip of your tongues…
Who I thought I was and would be has been slowly drifted into the back pockets of insecurities…

And once again, I stand in front of the mirror and I ask my self,
*”How did I get here?”*

This side is suffocating me…
I’m in the middle of this street and no one can see me die…
Drowning in my tears and no one can see me cry…
I’m lost in my shadow no matter how hard I try…

I’m hungry for believe,
Starving to be understood…
I crave for freedom,
Yelling for justice…

I wanna pass out,
I wanna die,
Fade away
And maybe by that, I will be heard
And I will be *free*

Breast: A Tool For Mass Instruction

Don’t squeeze too tight
ooohhh this boy
Agyeeeiiiiii! Waka mi
Akua always sleeps with it in her mouth
From the North to the East to the west to the South
Little baby, where else could you find better food
Than from the nectar those two round balls brought

You can’t deny that at one point in your life you needed it
You needed it so bad, you cried and wailed for it
Begged and screamed for it
Wouldn’t stop crying until your lips latched onto it
The joy those two round balls brought

You still can’t forget about it
So even after 20 years, you still want more of it
To play with, suck, to caress, to love
Once they’re in your hands, you just can’t get enough of it
The joy those two round balls bring

Now you have them
And though you may not want them in your mouth any more
You’re dying for someone else to taste them
Or probably you’ve already gotten a sucker
Someone who knows how to work’em for your back to ache in pleasure
Oh what joy those two round balls bring

Source of food
source of pleasure
Something to love
Something to treasure
Good news is it doesn’t come in ones but it comes in twos
Who can truly say they never loved boobs

Matters of the breast are not gender biased
As we’re trying to fight breast cancer, let’s not be quiet
Spread awareness with utmost importance, don’t be defiant
Male and female
Young and old
Rich and poor
Let’s stand abreast as we fight against breast cancer
Let’s not forget that All Breasts Matters
